1.Greening Operations
The Grand Harbour Clean Air Project has a sweeping environmental ambition – to comprehensively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in the port and densely populated surrounding area.
Coordinated by Transport Malta and implemented by Infrastructure Malta, the project provides shore-to-ship electricity for cruise liners operating within the Port of Valletta.
Up to five cruise liners can connect to the facilities simultaneously, making Malta one of the first countries in Europe to implement a port-wide electrification solution.
The project, co-financed by the Connecting Europe facility, is expected to result in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from cruise ships at berth by up to 40%.
Significantly, the project is also expected to reduce air pollutants emitted by cruise ships at berth, like sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter, by as much as 99.6%. This will improve air quality for approximately 17 000 families living in the Grand Harbour area.
Malta is an increasingly popular destination for cruise ships. According to Malta’s national statistics office, there were 309 cruise liner calls in the country during 2023.
