Parent organisation: FPS – Mobility and Transport

• Represent Belgium at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO)
   
• Interpreting and applying the Belgian Maritime Code and Royal Decrees
   
• Enforcing international and national maritime regulations (e.g. SOLAS, STCW, COLREG, ISPS, …)
   
• Issuing administrative fines for violations of maritime law 
   
• Overseeing maritime security (ports, ships and infrastructure in the Belgian part of the North Sea) through the Maritime Security Division, including 24/7 permanence
   
• Approving and supervising port security plans and assessments and recognized security organizations
   
• Secretariat of the National Authority for Maritime Security
   
• Sectoral Authority for NIS and CER
   
• Participating in MIK for vessel tracking, data sharing, enforcement coordination
   
• Conducting port state control inspections, including environmental inspections 
   
• Managing responsibilities as a flag state
   
• Maintaining the national ship registry, for all types of vessels (seagoing, inland waterways and pleasure crafts)
   
• Approving Recognized Organisations
