The European Union has over 180 civilian and military authorities that lead coast guard functions at the national level, requiring strong cross-border and cross-sector collaboration to prevent redundancy and enhance efficiency.  

The Commission Recommendation 2021/1222 established the Practical Handbook on European Cooperation on Coast Guard Functions. 

There are eleven coast guard functions, and the list was originally generated by the European Coast Guard Functions Forum (ECGFF).
