About

Introduction

Within the European Union, there are more than 300 civilian and military authorities responsible for carrying out coast guard functions. There is therefore a need to ensure a close cross-border and cross-sector collaboration and coordination between these authorities in order to avoid duplication and redundancy of efforts and to build up synergies.

Commission Recommendation
The Commission Recommendation establishing a Practical Handbook on European Cooperation on Coast Guard Functions was adopted on 20/07/2021. Access this section to read more about the users, objectives, scope, and content of the Handbook.
Coast guard functions
For the purposes of the Handbook, coast guard functions (CGFs) are understood as those commonly referred to by the three agencies. There are eleven coast guard functions, and the list was originally generated by the European Coast Guard Functions Forum (ECGFF).
