Maritime administration authority operates in Polish maritime areas, i.e. internal waters, territorial sea, i.e. in areas where the Polish state exercises territorial sovereignty, and to a limited extent in areas of the exclusive economic zone, where, in accordance with the Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Polish state exercises rights sovereign, in ports and sea harbors, as well as in the coastal belt running along the sea coast.

The main tasks of the Office are related with: maritime safety and security (herein seafarer`s certification), flag and port ship inspections, protection of the marine environment, monitoring of sea routeing, ports and harbors  order maintenance, performance  of underwater works and extraction of possessions from the sea, supervision of fire protection in ports and harbors, administration of waters and lands covered by sea waters and spatial planning of those areas, construction, maintenance and protection of shore embankments, dunes and afforestation and also construction and maintenance of the access infrastructure to the ports and harbors from the seaside.
