EMSA, with the support of the European Commission, the Member States and industry, has drawn up a non-mandatory Guidance to guide national administrations and industry aiming at a uniform implementation of the essential safety requirements for battery energy storage systems on board ships, closing the regulatory gap until the IMO develops guidelines.

The development of the Guidance was supported by an extensive Group of Experts, who brought essential knowledge on the requirements of classification societies, industry standards and available research.

The EMSA Guidance on the Carriage of AFVs in Ro-Ro Spaces was developed with the support of a group of experts from the European Commission, EU Member States and the industry. The Guidance is intended to assist relevant authorities and stakeholders in ensuring that the carriage of alternatively fuelled vehicles onboard ships is conducted safely and with due regard for protection of the environment. It can be applied to new and existing ships.
